South East London – Lead water main replacement in SE13

Lead Water Main Replacement in SE13 | Victorian End of Terrace | South East London

Overview

Bromley Energy completed a lead water main replacement in SE13, South East London, at a Victorian end-of-terrace property dating back to circa 1910.

The home was still served by its original lead incoming water supply, which was actively leaking at the time of inspection.

The homeowner raised concerns regarding water quality, and following assessment, it was clear the supply required permanent upgrading to modern standards.

We replaced approximately six metres of lead pipework with a new 25mm MDPE water main, fully restoring supply the same day.

The Problem

Many homes built before the 1970s still retain original lead incoming water supplies.

In this case:

The pipework was over 100 years old
The lead main was actively leaking
Water quality concerns had been raised
The internal shut-off arrangement did not meet current standards

Aside from the visible leak, ageing lead supplies pose potential long-term health concerns and can affect taste and water clarity.

The timing aligned perfectly with the homeowner choosing to take advantage of the local lead replacement scheme.

The Solution

We designed a full replacement of the incoming supply from boundary to internal stop tap.

System Upgrade Included:

Approximately 6 metres of lead pipe removed
New 25mm MDPE water supply installed
Traditional trench excavation along the front garden path
Same-day isolation and reinstatement of water supply

Internally, we upgraded the shut-off arrangement to comply with current regulations, incorporating:

Double check valve
Strainer
Drain off valve

This improves safety, compliance and future serviceability.

All works were completed by WaterSafe accredited installers and a compliance certificate was issued on completion.

Technical Approach

Excavation & External Works

The new MDPE supply was installed via a traditional trench route along the existing front garden path.

Careful trenching ensured:

Minimal disruption to landscaping
Protection of surrounding structures
Correct depth and frost protection
Secure entry point into the property

The water supply remained isolated only for the necessary working period and was fully restored the same day.

Internal Compliance Upgrade

The internal stop tap area was modernised to meet current Water Regulations standards.

By installing a compliant double check valve, strainer and drain off arrangement, the system now offers:

Improved backflow protection
Cleaner long-term operation
Easier servicing access

The Result

The property now benefits from:

Fully removed lead supply
Resolved leak
Improved water quality
Modern compliant shut-off system
WaterSafe certification

The homeowner now has complete peace of mind and, in their own words, is genuinely looking forward to drinking from the tap again.
